Do I need a license to install sprinklers in North Dakota?
We have not yet confirmed North Dakota's rules for sprinklers from an official state source. Check with the North Dakota State Fire Marshal or contractor licensing board, and your local AHJ.
Lead (unconfirmed): No fire-protection-specific state license found. The ND Secretary of State requires a general contractor license for any job over $4,000 (sos.nd.gov); check the local AHJ (lead only).
How to check
- Call the North Dakota State Fire Marshal and ask whether a state license, certification or registration applies to sprinklers.
- Check the state contractor licensing board – some states license fire protection as a contractor classification or as low-voltage electrical work.
- Confirm with the local AHJ. Cities, counties and fire districts can require local licenses, registration, permits and plan review on top of state rules.
